EXPOSITION IN THE SOUTHERN GALLERY

Close

To mark the 500th Anniversary of the Annunciation Cathedral in 1989, it was decided to restore the gallery and organize an exhibition intended to represent a unique collection of icons of the ancient royal private chapel. The exposition incorporates icons of the 14th-16th centuries. One group of icons was formerly placed in the central part of the cathedral, i.e. main iconostasis, altar part and wooden icon-cases (kiot) by pillars. Another group of icons originate from the iconostasis of the cathedral's upper chapels. An item worthy of particular note is the entirely displayed iconostasis of the Archangel Gabriel's side chapel. Among the exhibits is a precious altar cross of 1560s-1570s from the altar of the Annunciation Cathedral.
